Ipoh mali

June 30th, 2011

Ipoh City is the home to many a miner who has made a fortune during the heydays of tin. Once a small kampung with dilapidated buildings, Ipoh, a town that tin built, did not pass with the demise of the tin industry. Instead, it has grown with the country’s economy. Poised to become the focal point of industry, business, investment, education, and social activities, Ipoh reflects the overall progress and development that Perak is experiencing.

Bearing a close resemblance to its Kuala Lumpur counterpart, the Ipoh Railway Station is an impressive landmark, which combines Gothic and Moorish architecture with modern embellishments. Hence its nickname, the Taj Mahal of Ipoh. Its compound comprises of the famous “Ipoh Tree”, a poisonous tree whose sap is used by the natives in the olden days to make fatal darts for their blow pipes. Surrounded by a beautiful floral garden, it also serves as a charming welcome to visitors arriving by rail.

Opposite the railway station is a neocolonial style building. Adjacent to that is the Ipoh Clock Tower, which was erected in 1917 as a memorial to J.W.W. Birch, the first British Resident of the state who was assassinated by a group of Malay chieftains in Pasir Salak in 1875. Ironically, there is another memorial built on the very spot where Birch was assassinated, but this one is dedicated to the Malay warriors who murdered him.

Apart from Penang, Ipoh is the other name that is constantly at the tip of the tongue when the subject matter concerned is food. The early Chinese immigrants who poured into the state brought with them the cooking styles of their provinces, most of whom were from the southern provinces. These cooking styles blended well with the local air and a new breed of food came about, such as the Ipoh “Hor Fun” or flat rice noodles. The writer is also of the opinion that Ipoh has the best fish balls in the country.

Phuket, Thailand

June 30th, 2011

Phuket lies off the west coast of Southern Thailand in the Andaman Sea, approximately 890km from Bangkok. It is Thailand’s largest island at 550sq km, roughly the same size as Singapore, and is surrounded by many smaller islands that add a further 70 sq km to its total land area. Phuket is separated from the mainland by the Chong Pak Phra channel at its northernmost point, where a causeway connects the island to the mainland.

Phuket is quite hilly. There are a few peaks above 500m, the highest being Mai Tao Sipsong at 529m. Many of these are covered in lush jungle. The lowlands consist of rice paddies, plantations of rubber, pineapple and coconut as well as the only significant area of rainforest remaining on the island, which is now protected as Khao Phra Thaeo Park.

The most beautiful beaches are found on the West coast, separated by rocky coves and headlands. The east coast comprises limestone shoals with only a few sandy beaches while spectacular limestone islands adorn the horizon. Coral gardens full of exotic marine life dot the emerald waters surrounding the island, although sadly much of Phuket’s coral has been disappearing due to environmental pressures and human activities.

You’ll love every piece of Victoria

June 30th, 2011

Greater Melbourne is set around the shores of Port Phillip Bay, while the city centre is laid out in a large rectangle on the northern banks of the Yarra River, about five kilometres from the bay.

The soul of a city
This lively and cosmopolitan city combines a fanatical love for the creative arts and good living with a state-wide sports addiction to make a city like no other. Food, art, music, wine and football – is there anything else?

CBD
One glance at a map and it’s obvious that Melbourne is a planned city: a tidy, balanced grid of neatly angled streets. But beneath this lies a restless creative energy constantly pushing back at the city’s seeming conservatism. From Southbank and the Yarra to the Flinders and Greek Quarters, the CBD is made up of precincts – distinct enclaves each with its own flavour and charm.

City fringe
Extending around the bay are a number of inner suburbs, each with its own distinct character and personality. A short tram ride from the city centre, Melbourne’s suburban neighbourhoods are a must see for anyone wanting to experience what life here is really all about.

Lang Tengah Island

June 23rd, 2011

Pulau Lang Tengah or Lang Tengah Island off the coast of Terengganu is one of the nation’s well-kept secrets. Its arresting beauty can easily captivate you while you are there. Crystal clear sea-water, pristine beaches and untouched tropical jungle. Its arresting beauty lingers forever in your memory. An island you can call your own, private and tranquil.

Scuba diving and snorkelling
There are 12 dive sites around the island, with a depth of 7-26 metres and within 5-15 minutes’ boat ride from the resorts. At the nearby Redang, Perhentian and Bidong Islands, there are another 40 sites, within 30-45 minutes from Lang Tengah by boat.

One of the notable attractions for scuba divers at Lang Tengah is the possibility of sighting whale sharks or manta rays at certain times of the year. Turtles are present throughout the year as are barracudas and if you are lucky you may also spot a leopard shark.

Jungle trekking
For early risers, one of the best treks is the early morning trek to Batu Kuching (Cat’s rock) where you can watch the sunrise at 06:30 am. The trek takes around 30 minutes from the resorts and can also be done at any other time of day for beautiful views over the island and the surrounding sea.

Sydney, Australia

June 9th, 2011

Book a window seat for your flight to Sydney: day or night, this dirty town sure is good-lookin’. Skin-deep? Sure, but Sydney is also arty, sporty, boozy, funny, fashionable…the perfect paramour!

It’s little wonder that Sydney causes a brain drain on the rest of Australia. Like New York, London and Berlin, this is a place that draws in anyone who’s got something interesting to say. Australia’s best musos, foodies, actors, stockbrokers, models, writers and architects flock to the Harbour City to make their mark, and the effect is dazzling: a hyperenergetic, ambitious marketplace of the soul, where anything goes and everything usually does.

Of course, the stage for all this activity is just as important as the performance itself. Shimmering Sydney Harbour is the city’s greatest asset, while Sydney’s ocean beaches and lush parks sustain as much life as the city streets. Add hip bars, grungy pubs, breezy cafes and glass-walled restaurants to the equation, and you’ve got a town with the perfect balance of outdoor and indoor, natural and contrived.

Paddle out into it and see what kind of trouble you can get into: get dumped by breakers at Bondi, chew chicken’s feet in Chinatown, max out your credit card in Paddington, drink too many beers in Balmain, queue-jump for Opera House tickets and ignore dawn’s break at a Kings Cross club. Sexy, spirited and unfailingly self-confident, Sydney is a bonfire of the vanities just waiting for you to light the match.
